Pilates
Introduction
Pilates is an internationally recognised method of body conditioning which focuses on core stability and strengthening the body. Anybody can benefit from Pilates workouts although it is often recommended by physiotherapists and sports medicine practitioners for modification and restoration of strength and mobility in athletes including gymnasts and dancers.
Pilates is low impact and non-aerobic with focus on physical alignment and balance. Using the co-ordination of breathing to maximise the effectiveness of the exercises, Pilates can gradually modify damaging or habitual patterns of muscle use.
Pilates mat-work exercises are popular because they can be done in limited space and many of the exercises can be done without special equipment.
Regular Pilates workouts result in stronger, leaner muscles, increased flexibility and improved postural strength.
